So I was thinking of selling my 300ZX. We’ve had some !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but I’ve been driving Zeds for a while and want something different. And it’s coming up to 200,000km and needs some work done, so why not let it go now?
I was going to look at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! this weekend. Owned by a friendly old guy, nice color, cheaper maintenance than the Z, eligible for drastically cheaper club registration where I live. Bit pricey, but good ones are desirable and this is a good one.
So that’s the background.
Tonight I hopped in the Z to get some burgers. I’ve had this car for a few years and ~35,000km, never let me down. Tonight it let me down.
I get in. Turn the key. It starts. Revs go up. Revs go down, to 0. Stall. Not in gear, shouldn’t be stalling.
Try again. Cranks, but that’s it. Cranking much faster than usual.
Spoke to a mechanic I know. He thinks it’s either the timing belt (engine’s rooted) or the head gasket (engine’s rooted). Le sigh.
This always sucks. But there’s good and bad so I’m trying to keep a level head:
!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!
It’s in my car port, at my house
My brother is going away for 3 weeks tomorrow, I can use his car if I need to.
I just got the $720 yearly rego fee, haven’t paid it yet
It needed an expensive service and a thrust bearing replacement, and the clutch was going, and that’s also money I haven’t spent
I feel (almost) like it’s time to move on, it’s not like I just got the thing
This was literally the first trip I’ve taken since getting back from a 3000km road trip - if it happened in South Australia things would be worse
!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!
This sucks. Shit cost money. Spent money on it, now it’s nearly worthless
Don’t really feel like spending up on an MR2 (or anything ever) given the loss I’m taking on the Z
Got no car
Was about to sell it - if only it happened afterwards!
So it’s pretty positive, given the situation. Need to get an inspection done before I decide what to do, but the prognosis looks bad.
For the curious, it’s a ‘94 300ZX 2+2 targa N/A, Aus-spec. Completely stock except head unit, in lovely AH3 Cherry Red Pearl.
Bonus: photodump of me and my Z
Before this Z I had a Z31. Before that another Z32 that I totalled. This is when I first got the red Z, before I replaced the wheels with factory ones.
On holiday, went down the dirtiest road ever. Yeah, that’s dirt on the back. And the door sill.
Got halfway to work with the roof off before the rain finally caught up with me. This is after I’d stopped and put the roof back on. By the time you call it quits, you’re already getting wet.
Was used as a wedding car for my best friend’s wedding, along with his Evo 6 TME.
On a Z cruise. 4 Z32s, 4 lanes wide.
The aforementioned TME

Belts shouldn’t be that big of an issue in an MR2. SW20 prices are going through the roof because most of them end up being wrecked, riced, or both, so I wouldn’t feel bad about putting money into it. They’re reliable once sorted.

That’s what I’m thinking. And so many have been riced/wrecked already. Z32s are going down and have been for a while, but the MR2’s cheap mid-engine-ness is something you can’t get from any other car. The prices seem steady, should go up. Would be nice to sell for a profit for once...
